Melnik is a town in in the southwestern Pirin Mountains and is about 440 m above sea level. The town is an architectural reserve and 96 of its buildings are cultural monuments. With a population of 385, it is the smallest town in Bulgaria, retaining its city status today for historical reasons.

Rozhen Monastery is aproximatly 12 minutes drive from Melnik, Rozhen Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God is the largest monastery in the Pirin Mountains in southwestern Bulgaria, nestled in the Melnik Earth Pyramids. It is one of the few medieval Bulgarian monasteries which is well preserved.
